In this week's journal entry we travel back to Easter in the 1950's with Elvis. I found this note a few years ago while scouring the internet. " Just a little Easter note sent along your way, to wish you health and happiness this coming Easter Day. A very Happy Easter to you and yours! " - Elvis Presley I also recently discovered home video footage of Elvis with friends & family Easter weekend 1957. 1957 was a pivotal time in Elvis' career. "In 1957 Elvis' popularity was solidified and his path in the entertainment business for the next decade was determined. Rather than continue the TV bookings and grueling concert appearances (143 shows in 79 cities) that had propelled Elvis to the top of the entertainment world in 1956, his manager used a new set of priorities to guide Presley’s career in 1957. Colonel Parker has been vilified by Presley fans through the years for steering the star’s career in the wrong direction. However, Parker’s career-changing strategy in 1957 was based on his client’s wishes. Elvis's dream was to be a serious Hollywood actor. In 1956 Presley had signed two multi-picture Hollywood contracts, and when Twentieth Century Fox released Love Me Tender nationwide in November 1956, Elvis called making the movie “the biggest thrill of my life.” While Presley still acknowledged the thrill of live performances, he was beginning to complain about the lack of sleep and the physical dangers posed by zealous fans during his hectic road schedule. In addition, as exciting as being on stage could be, Elvis realized that his music had become meaningless during personal appearances. The exhilaration of being on stage was still there for Elvis, but the feeling of artistic accomplishment had disappeared. It was risky to abandon the proven precepts of success, but in the end the strategy of converting Elvis 1956 into Elvis 1957 put the singer’s career firmly on the track both Presley and Parker wanted. By the end of 1957, Elvis was more popular than ever, allowing his career to withstand his two-year absence from the spotlight while in the army. Long before smartphones and social media, there was the humble photo booth. Friends squeezed together behind a curtain. Couples shared a laugh. Families captured ordinary moments they never imagined would one day become treasured memories. Decades later, these little strips of photographs often survive long after the people in them have grown older. Not because the paper itself is valuable, but because it preserves something far more precious—a moment in time. These vintage celebrity photo booth pictures remind us that behind every famous face was a son, daughter, friend, sweetheart, or family member creating memories just like the rest of us. Believe it or not, photo booths have been around since 1925. The first one was featured by inventor Anatol Josepho, in New York City . It was an immediate success. People lined up around the block to have their photos taken for 25 cents. As many as 7,500 people a day sat inside. Even the Governor and Senator. Before long, the Photomaton, as it was called, could be found all over the world. Around the 1950's, complaints started coming in from Photomatons in Woolworth's and other stores. People were getting a little cheeky behind the curtain. As a result Woothworth's removed the curtains to discourage the thrill seekers. Nevertheless, the popularity still increased and soon Hollywood caught on to the excitement. Celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elvis Presley and even President John Kennedy and his wife nestled inside the booth for a cozy little picture. Recently I was reminiscing about the Easter's I spent as a child. It got me wondering about other Easter traditions from the past. Here are seven old fashioned Easter celebrations from the years gone by. Easter Bonnets I remember at Easter time, children and adults alike put on their Sunday best and headed to church. One year, my Aunt sewed my sister and I special Easter outfits. Matching Easter dresses complete with the traditional Easter bonnet. I was thrilled, I never wore one before and was so excited to try it on and wear it on Easter Sunday. Easter bonnets were a staple back in the day. In the 1940's and 1950's all sorts of unique bonnets and hats were worn to mass on Easter Sunday. Mine however, being the 1970's, was more reminiscent of Holly Hobbie or Laura Ingalls. It is rumored that the hollow chocolate Easter bunny gained popularity for dental reasons. According to a popular confectioner the solid version was likely to break a tooth biting into it. This quote is from Country Living: "Ever wondered why this Easter candy must-have usually has an empty filling? According to one of the oldest chocolate bunny confectionaries, R.M. Palmer, there's a method to the madness: dental health. "If you had a larger-size bunny and it was solid chocolate, it would be like a brick; you’d be breaking teeth," Mark Schlott, executive vice president of operations, explained to Smithsonian." Easter Corsages Another long lost Easter tradition is the Easter corsage. Men would purchase them for the lady in their life. Pining them on their mother or wife's fancy Easter dress or wrist. How sweet is that? Who wouldn't love to wear a beautiful corsage from the one they love. This quote is from Pro Flowers: "Corsages were usually pinned on upside down, with the bow at the top, and were much larger than the corsages we see today. When choosing your corsage, it’s important to take into account the color of your dress. The Easter Feast The Easter meal is a long honored tradition that still continues today. Families gather 'round the table and celebrate a variety of dishes. Ham being the most popular part of the Easter feast. Catholics would usually give up certain sweets and treats for Lent and Easter would culminate in finally splurging on the things they had done without for 40 days. Seeing these recipes reminded me of one of my Birthday's as a child. One year it fell on Easter and my Mum made me a special Easter Bunny Cake. He was so cute with his fluffy coconut fur, licorice whiskers and gumdrop nose. The recipe was featured in a cookbook distributed by Baker's Coconut. In our house there was one special decorated egg that was declared the grand prize if found. This was usually a five dollar bill and my parent's delighted in taking great care and ingenuity in hiding it. Often resorting to the "Your getting cold, warm or hot" clues to help us to find it. One year I recall it was buried in a potted plant. It took us hours to find...clever. These days most people use chocolate or plastic eggs for the hunt, which is a good idea for families that own pets. Hungry dogs, an endless supply of hard boiled eggs and a family get together aren't a good mix, trust me. Sugar Easter Eggs One of my favorite items inside my Easter basket, besides the jelly belly jelly beans, was the sugar egg. I was fascinated by it's intricate design and detailed scene hiding inside. Hollywood Celebrities Dressed As Easter Bunnies I will close this post out with a tradition that you wouldn't dare see politically correct Hollywood participating in nowadays. Back in the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's Hollywood actresses posed as the Easter bunny and did many promotional photos celebrating Easter.
