The fifties were a groundbreaking time in our history. Many changes were taking place. Life after the depression and war left young Americans yearning for something different. The days of social values and conformity gave way to more rebellious overtones.

Influences in film and music shaped young minds in the 1950’s. Paving the way with their unique style, here is a list of some of the most fascinating pop culture rebels of the fifties.

•James Dean - With his ruffian appearance and wild spirit, James Dean was the epitome of a rebel. Famous for his movie role in Rebel Without a Cause, his love of fast cars and his defiance of Hollywood norms.

My purpose in life does not include a hankering to charm society.”

James Dean

•Elvis Presley - Chastised for his gyrating hip motions and his racially taboo style music. Elvis influenced a generation with his individually.

•Marlon Brando - Cool and confident. Marlon Brando stepped onto the Hollywood screen and into the youth psyche. His non-conformist attitude, along with his blue jean and t shirt style was idealized by many.

“I refused to be a fool dancing on a string held by all of those big shots. I don't apologize, that's my life.”

Marlon Brando

•Katharine Hepburn - Strong, independent and unafraid to speak her mind. Actress Katharine Hepburn set her own style on and off the set. Some say she had a rather masculine style sense, but regardless it was her own, uninfluenced..

"If you obey all the rules you miss all the fun."

Katharine Hepburn

•Little Richard - Considered by some as the true originator of rock and  roll. Little Richard generated controversy with his music and off stage life. He pushed the envelope of social norms.
